Company Overview
The United Hospital Fund’s mission is to shape positive change in health care for the people of New York. We advance policies and support programs that promote high quality, patient-centered health care services that are accessible to all. We undertake research and policy analysis to improve the financing and delivery of care in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and other care settings. We raise funds and give grants to examine emerging issues and stimulate innovative programs. And we work collaboratively with civic, professional, and volunteer leaders to identify and realize opportunities for change.
Company History
The nation's oldest federated charity, the United Hospital Fund was founded by concerned New Yorkers in 1879 as an innovative approach to organizing public support for hospitals to help offset the growing cost of charity care. In the years that have passed, the Fund has played a central role in the founding of many of the organizations and institutions that today help define the city's health care landscape, including United Way of New York City, the New York Blood Center, and Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield. More recently, the Fund has supported the development of the Primary Care Development Corporation, the New York City AIDS Fund, the New York Society for Health Planning, New York Cares, and the National Quality Forum each of which is providing important benefits to the people of New York. The Fund is committed to furthering this tradition of innovation, as a place of ideas, activity, and participation, characterized by independence of thought and a commitment to core values.
