NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking a talented Research Scientist to support a growing portfolio of high profile health informatics projects within its Health Sciences Department. Location is flexible and remote work is also a possibility. 

Successful candidates may come from a wide range of professional backgrounds including research, policy analysis, consulting, health care administration, health informatics, academia or health care delivery. Successful candidates will have familiarity with health systems such as electronic health records, health information exchange, consumer health informatics and clinical decision support and/or significant experience in social research on health IT adoption and policy.

This position is responsible for providing direction and task leadership in all aspects of project work which could include development of analytic approaches, questionnaire design, data collection strategy, acquisition of existing data, data analysis, and/or preparing study conclusions and developing high quality reports.

DEPARTMENT: Health Sciences

NORC’s Health Sciences staff produce rich data on health care priorities including the uses of electronic clinical data in research, and the applications and effectiveness of health information technology.

Our expert staff evaluates the effectiveness of federal investments in informatics, supports the emerging fields of patient-centered outcomes research and mobile health. The staff also work on large implementation science projects involving patient safety and quality.   

NORC’s Health Sciences staff work closely with colleagues in Health Care and Public Health to offer program, policy, and research solutions. Our work is guided by a commitment to long-lasting partnerships, transparency, and high-quality, nonpartisan research that improves health and health care for all people.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as task leader with budget responsibilities on complex scientific and or technical components of large projects or a series of smaller projects.
  • Design research studies in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers.
  • Author and present research at client and professional meetings and lead drafting of final project reports. Submit articles for publication in refereed journals.
  • Author sections of analysis reports, technical reports, OMB clearance packages, and other documentary deliverables.
  • Assist with quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Engage in business development activities including authoring various sections of the technical proposal.
  • Monitor task budget and schedule.
  • Supervise staff involved for specific tasks and projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Master's Degree or Bachelor’s Degree and equivalent experience required; PhD in informatics, health sciences, health policy or public health preferred.
  • Background, skills, and a history of success in applied clinical informatics research. We are open to a broad array of clinical informatics domains, such clinical decision support, health information exchange and interoperability, mobile health, patient-provider interaction, and clinical/quality outcomes.
  • At least 7 years’ experience in positions of increasing responsibility in health research or related field (or equivalent education) including at least 5 years' of experience in quality measurement, health information technology, or related field.
  • Ability to think critically, apply qualitative and quantitative research experience, and demonstrate familiarity with the healthcare system and/or healthcare data electronic health records and/or claims [Medicare, Medicaid, private health plan, etc.])
  • Strong problem solving, project management, relationship management skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, organize and prioritize work assignments to meet project needs. 
  • Some experience in client communications and relationship management; solid technical writing skills.
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office software; strong proficiency with statistical analysis packages.
  • Must have experience managing and mentoring staff.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Occasional travel to client meetings.
